Recordo perfectament que tenia 10 anys i era un partit de UEFA contra l'Atlètic de Madrid. Durant el partit van donar la notícia de que un dels seguidors de la Real Societat havia estat apunyalat per algun cap rapat, ultra de l'Atlètic. Aquella mateixa nit va morir.
Des de llavors, en la majoria d'ocasions que la Real Societat ha visitat el Calderón, els seguidors matalassers no s'han privat d'entonar un curiós himne: "Aitor Zabaleta, era de la ETA". Sense paraules.
Los hechos criminales se remontan al 8 de diciembre de 1.998, trágico día en el que un seguidor de la Real Sociedad, Aitor Zabaleta, moría asesinado de una puñalada en el corazón que le había asestado un neonazi, Ricardo Guerra Cuadrado, tras una emboscada contra los donostiarras organizada por el grupo ultra Bastión.
Un par de semanas antes, el 24 de noviembre, con motivo de un partido de fútbol de la Copa del Rey que el Atlético de Madrid debía disputar con la Real Sociedad en la ciudad de San Sebastián, un grupo de ultras se desplazó en un autobús fletado expresamente para ello por el Frente Atlético; en el autobus iban la mayor parte de los miembros de Bastión, salvo Ricardo Guerra al estar cumpliendo condena de prisión, en régimen de tercer grado penitenciario, y verse obligado a pernoctar por la noche en el centro Victoria Kent en Madrid.
Al regresar del encuentro de fútbol, el autobús en el que viajaban este grupo de ultras fue apedreado en las inmediaciones de San Sebastián y eso fue motivo para que sus ocupantes empezaran a concebir la idea de devolver la agresión sufrida en el partido de vuelta que se disputaría el 8 de diciembre en el Vicente Calderón.
“Vamos de cacería”
El día de autos, el 8 de diciembre, convocados por el líder de Bastión, Miguel Ángel Marcos Bueno, alias “ el Tocho”, se concentran a mediodía en torno a la Plaza Mayor de Madrid; allí comienzan, desde ese momento, las agresiones a los seguidores donostiarras, habían quedado para ir de “cacería”. Durante todo la jornada se produjeron numerosos ataques contra cualquier seguidor de la Real Sociedad que transitara por el centro de Madrid. Posteriormente Ricardo Guerra, que iba armado con una navaja, junto con su grupo se dirigen al estadio donde, en sus inmediaciones, se concentran numerosos cabezas rapadas.
En torno a las 6 de la tarde llegaba a la zona del Vicente Calderón el autobús de la peña femenina “Izar”, repleto en su mayoría de mujeres y niños, junto a algunos hombres como acompañantes. Los seguidores de la Real habían llegado bastante pronto al estadio para comprar algunas entradas que les faltaban y preguntan a un policía municipal por un lugar tranquilo donde poder tomar algo. El agente, de forma insensata, les envía a un bar cercano, punto de reunión habitual de cabezas rapadas del grupo Bastión del Atlético de Madrid. Un camarero les advierte de lo peligroso del lugar, pero es demasiado tarde, los cabezas rapadas no tardan en llegar e increpan a los seguidores donostiarras, les tenían preparada una encerrona a los seguidores de la Real Sociedad en los momentos previos al partido. Era toda una emboscada neonazi.
Hay un primer incidente en la puerta del bar, insultos y algunos golpes. Los neonazis les roban las bufandas, rompen sus grandes chisteras con los colores de la Real Sociedad y a todos les amenazan de muerte. A continuación, los seguidores de la Real cruzan la carretera y acosados, corren asustados; van mujeres con niños, familias, todos pegados al estadio Vicente Calderón buscando su puerta de acceso, que se encuentra en el otro extremo del fondo norte. Dramáticamente todos los accesos están cerrados a esa hora, salvo esa puerta hacia donde se dirigen. Los neonazis de forma sorpresiva y perfectamente coordinada, por ser la ocasión que habían previsto y estaban esperando, aparecen al unísono, les atacan por varios puntos, pueden ser 40 energúmenos, 50 o quien sabe, unos 60, algunos totalmente de negro, como uniformados, muchas cazadoras “bomber” y súbitamente, aparecen dos vehículos de color oscuro, uno de ellos un Volkswagen Golf y el otro también pequeño, de los que descienden de ocho a diez individuos, portando uno de ellos, cuando menos, una navaja de gran tamaño, al tiempo que desde las calles y lugares adyacentes llegan otros grupos mas, a la carrera, lanzando botellas y piedras, rodeando y agrediendo a los seguidores donostiarras, al tiempo que vociferan gritos alusivos y despreciativos con el País Vasco, e incitan a dar muerte a los seguidores de la Real.
Aitor Zabaleta que iba rezagado por la discusión con los ultras en el bar, se detiene para defender a un niño de seis años de los ataques. Acto seguido, corre en busca de su novia, Verónica Olivenza, que ha huido momentos antes. Su carrera se ve bruscamente frenada en el fondo norte, cuatro rapados le rodean y uno de ellos le asesta una puñalada mortal en el corazón.
Aitor que camina unos pasos se encuentra con su novia y empieza a palidecer. Verónica avisa a unos policías municipales que le atienden en primera instancia. Diez minutos después llegan las asistencias sanitarias del Samur y le trasladan urgentemente a la clínica de La Concepción. Aitor Zabaleta ingresa en el centro sanitario con parada cardiorrespiratoria, entra en coma y fallece sobre las 3.00 horas del 9 de diciembre de 1998.
A su vez, como consecuencia de esas agresiones, resultaron con lesiones de diversa consideración, Miren Itxaso Legarra, Iñaqui Gorostiza, Lorenzo Rodríguez y Maider Gorostidi, todos ellos integrantes de la peña Izar, junto a un Policía Nacional de los agentes que repelían a los neonazis.
